The rule of 72 tells you the time it takes to double your investment.  Divide the number 72 by the rate of return on an investment to determine the number of years it will take to double your money.

Example:
You are earning 6% on your investment, divided into 72 = 12 Years to double your money.  And that's the Rule of 72.
